Practical guide / Flooring

How to measure
for flooring.

A room sketch and rough measurements help us understand what you need. Follow these steps, then ask your store to confirm the final measurements before ordering.

01 / Sketch the shape

Put the room on paper.

Draw the whole room, including alcoves, recesses, doorways and fixed features. A simple outline is enough. Add a second sketch for another room rather than squeezing everything into one drawing.

02 / Record the dimensions

Note the longest points.

Record the longest overall length and width, including recesses. Write the units beside every measurement and keep them consistent. Add the dimensions of alcoves and changes in shape so the layout is clear.

03 / Add the useful details

Show us what is there now.

Include room photographs, the existing flooring and any door or access restrictions. Mention stairs, landings and irregular shapes so the team can advise about professional measuring.

04 / Confirm before ordering

Let the store check the plan.

Multiplying length by width does not by itself tell you how much flooring to order. Roll widths, pattern direction, joins, cuts, pack sizes and product requirements can all affect quantities. Ask the store to confirm the final measurement and layout.

For stairs, awkward layouts or a final order, ask about the measuring service. Your store will confirm the arrangements and applicable terms.
